Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Coordinator

At Little Gems we provide an environment in which all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities , are supported to reach their full potential. We have a Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO) that has been trained to support the key person, child and families to ensure that the child’s individual needs are met. We have robust policies and procedures in place which are monitored and reviewed regularly ensuring that our resources and environments are suitable and accessible for all. We ensure that the provision for children with special educational needs is the responsibility of all members of the setting. The SENDCO will work closely with the key person to differentiate resources, experiences and activities to support the child.   The SENDCO will work in partnership with parents and other agencies (with the parent’s consent) such as Early Years Inclusion Officers, Speech and Language Therapists and Health Visitors to gain further advise in supporting each individual child and in meeting children’s individual needs.  The SENDCO and the key person will work collaboratively to ensure that these targets and strategies are implemented and the plans and activities will be reviewed by the key person, SENDCO and the parents regularly to update plans and provide support for all children.

We work closely with parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities to create and maintain a positive partnership and provide them with the all the information that they may need. When the child starts Nursery the parents and key person will work together to settle the child into Nursery, this will allow the key person to get familiar with the child’s routines and their likes and dislikes, interests and abilities. We encourage parents to work together with the key person so that we are up to date of any new interests the child may have which can be in cooperated into the activities that are planned for the child.
